In November 2024 the Mental Health Bill was introduced to parliament, as an update of the 1983 Mental Health Act (MHA), the purpose of the Bill is to update the MHA to make it reflect 21st century values of personalised case, greater patient autonomy, dignity and respect, by strengthening patient voices and ensuring that detention is only used when, and for no longer than, necessary. These changes include aiming to prevent the current disadvantages voiced by individuals with autism and / or a learning disability.
For those who work with people with learning disabilities, we know that each person is an individual and needs their own very special programme of care. To help you meet these needs we have developed a range of courses that will assist you in developing your knowledge and give you access to recognised methods and models . See our learning disability and autism courses and our Oliver McGowan mandatory training
If you can't find the course you want we'll work with you to create a training programme that works for you.
The training is named after Oliver McGowan. Oliver was a young man whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better skills, knowledge and understanding of the needs for autistic people and people with a learning disability.
